VETERANS – PLEASE READ
Numbers sometimes help illustrate the need for a service. In its first year, the National Veterans Administration (VA) Suicide Hotline received 55,000 calls from Veterans and those who care about them. In this first year, 22,000 Veterans were counseled and referred to services near them. The success of the Hotline has resulted in 1,221 Veterans or family members accessing critical interventions that reduced the risks of suicide or suicidal behaviors.
Still, that is a long way from helping everyone who needs it. The VA estimates that 6,500 Veterans commit suicide each year. Please, don’t be one of them. There are people to talk with, people who care about you, many of them Veterans themselves. If you or a loved one are suffering and need to talk to someone about it, you can. Veterans may call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and press "1" to reach the VA hotline, which will be staffed by mental health professionals who will work closely with local VA mental health providers to help callers reach needed services.
